Pearce Applauds BLM Decision to Extend Comment Period

Today, U.S. Congressman Steve Pearce applauded the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) on its decision to extend the comment period for the Draft Tri-County Resource Management Plan/Environmental Impact Statement (RPM/EIS), which would have a major impact on land management in Doña Ana, Sierra, and Otero Counties.

"Public land in New Mexico is owned by the people," said Pearce, "but the people are being given less access to that land and less voice in how it is managed. I applaud the BLM today for their decision to take more time to hear from the people their decisions will affect. I hope that they will consider the feedback they receive, and decide against more restrictions. We need a land management policy sensitive to the needs of the people, not one that impedes job creation and keeps seniors and people with disabilities out of public land."

More information on the plan can be found on the BLM's website at www.blm.gov/nm. Last month, Pearce asked New Mexicans in Doña Ana, Otero, and Sierra Counties to submit comments on the Draft Management Plan. The comment period has now been extended through September 12, 2013, providing an additional 60 days to submit comments.
